Finding a Good LED Flashlight for Patrol

Let's face it, with so many flashlights in the market to choose from today, it can be difficult to find "the" one that is just right. No one ever likes to think they are making a poor choice when they make a purchase, but; it never seems to fail, shortly after you buy something, you'll see something you like more.

For many police officers, flashlights are provided by their departments and they don't get a choice, for others, it's a personal choice and finding the right light can be daunting. Regardless if you are the officer making a decision for a SWAT team, a new cadet buying your first flashlight or an old road dog upgrading your incandescent light that's seen better days, thinking about what you will do with that light will help point you in the right direction.

What do you mean what will I do with it? I'm going to light things up, dummy! Well, you're right; you will light things up with it; but, how, where, when and why? When you are armed with the answers to these questions, you will be able to make a better choice for your needs; that way, when your buddy shows up and you begin to think he got something better, you won't be second guessing your first choice.

For police work there are three types of lights; weapon mounted, vehicle mounted and those that are carried personally. People usually think of personally carried lights when they think of a flashlight. Weapon mounted lights have very special uses and an officer that has a weapon mounted light, even on a pistol, should also have a personally carried light as well. Pointing a "loaded flashlight" at an old lady with chest pain just isn't cool. So let's discuss personally carried lights and leave the vehicle and weapon mounted lights for another time.

It used to be one size fits most, when it came to flashlights. Today, if you have the budget and the arm strength, you can buy a high intensity discharge (HID) handheld light that puts out 5000 lumens for over 110 minutes; you can also buy a light you put on your keychain with a pushbutton LED that will last about 1000 hours and provide enough light to read your favorite novel. A 5000 lumen light would be great for search and rescue and a pushbutton LED would be great for a sniper that was referring to windage charts in low light. Somewhere between the aircraft landing light and the reading light there is a light suitable to your task.

For police work a light must be dependable, it doesn't matter how bright it is supposed to be if it doesn't work. A good light for patrol should run for at least 90 minutes on its highest setting before needing fed new batteries. Rechargeable batteries are always a good upgrade, when your light can accept them. If you go the rechargeable route make sure you invest in the best rechargeable batteries you can buy; your life may depend on them.

Brightness is also an important factor. If you are new to LED light technology, figure 80 lumens is brighter than older flashlights with 4 D Cell batteries. How bright is too bright? Well, if you are in low light or darkness, are you looking for bad guys? There are lights out now that are 400 to 500 lumens, that's bright! However; with that much light, you could easily toast your low light vision and the bad guys for that matter and you are probably going to have enough backwash (light reflecting off everything in the room) to light up yourself as well.

I'm not against lights that are that bright; but, sometimes too much isn't just right. Also consider as the lumens go up, the runs times go down and the light requires more batteries to feed its hunger for power. For me, 80 to 200 lumens is the neighborhood I look for in a good patrol light. 80 to 200 lumens is brighter than anything we have ever had access to, it is plenty of light to light up even the biggest of rooms we search and it is not so much light that we blind ourselves or silhouette ourselves in the process.

Along with the brightness comes adjustability. Having an LED light set to its highest setting isn't required all the time. When you just need a "little" light for a task, having the ability to turn the light down is a must. Lower settings help conserve your low light vision and it saves on battery life as well. Most LED lights have several settings to adjust the light. The more the better; but be sure the light you consider has immediate access to the brightest setting so it can be accessed if a threat suddenly pops up. You don't want to be fumbling with a light switch if you're trying to acquire a bad guy.

A strobe function is also a good addition to a patrol light. If you are not familiar with "strobing," it is a feature on today's newest lights. Flashing a strobe light into the eyes of a subject in low light has been shown to disorient them, sometimes to the point of making them physically sick. For the user, being behind the light, the same untoward effects are not felt. The strobe can be a dramatic, intimidating tactic in low light. Like the adjustability; if your new light is going to have a strobe feature, it needs to be immediately accessible in a crisis situation.

The ability to carry the light also must be considered. For years, flashlights have been a round tube with the light at one end, the batteries stacked behind the light head and a switch on the tube or on the tail cap. New developments have changed the way we carry our lights, as well. There are lights you can clip on your shirt pocket or lapel, there are even lights you can wear on your head.

One company has designed a flashlight that is worn on the hand so both of your hands are free while using the light. To me this is an interesting concept. Think about this for a minute; if you are on a traffic stop in low light, do you have your light out? What are you going to do with that light if you need to demonstrate field sobriety tests? Write a ticket? Handcuff the subject? You are going to do what we all do, stick the light in your mouth (if it's small enough), stick it in your belt or stick it under your arm. What about shooting at night? We all have our favorite flashlight technique for shooting a night; but, if the gun malfunctions or we need to reload, the light goes right into our mouths or under our arm.

Having a light on your hand and not in your hand is the biggest advance in flashlight technology I have seen to date. With this latest addition to the law enforcement field; a good patrol light should have the ability to be used and keep both hands free for other tasks as well.

You are now armed with the information you need to go forth and find a new light suited for police work. To summarize; the light should: run for at least 90 minutes on new batteries without a recharge, be 80 to 200 lumens in strength, be adjustable from full power to low power with instant access to the highest setting; have a strobe function with instant access and have the ability to keep both of your hands free while the light is in use. This a pretty tall order for a good patrol light. They are out there, just spend some time to find the light that is right for you; your life could depend on it.

Optical Or Digital Zoom? the Choice is Clear

What is zoom?

Sometimes when you take a photo you need to focus on one area in the picture frame. For example when you take a portrait photo you want to make sure the object's face fills the photo frame while when you take a group photo you want to make sure everybody is in the photo frame.

In to focus on that one area in the photo frame you can either physically move closer to the objects or use the camera's zoom feature. When using the zoom feature the camera (mechanically when applying an optical zoon or electronically when applying a digital zoom) enlarges that area to fit the full picture frame.

There are two types of zoom - optical and digital (in older film cameras the only zoom option was optical). We will try to explain the differences between the two.

How does optical zoon work?

Optical zoom works by physically moving the camera's lenses and changing the focal length. By changing the focal length you can make objects appear bigger and fit the full photo frame.

When satisfied with the zoom position you can shoot the photo by simply applying the shutter button.

How does digital zoom work?

With digital zoom you actually use built-in software in the camera to define a portion of the photo which you are interested in. Once chosen the software crops the rest of the photo and enlarges the area you chose to fit the complete photo frame.

The process of enlarging the zoomed area is also known as extrapolation. The camera software needs to calculate new values for the pixels that were cropped in order to result in a full frame photo. The downside of this digital process is that the enlarged photo quality is lower than the original photo taken.

It is easy to understand the quality loss using an example. Lets assume that you have a 2MP (2 megapixels) camera. You point the camera and decide that you want to zoom in 2X. You run the digital zoom software and choose a 2X zoom. To accomplish this zoom the camera crops half of the photo and enlarges the other half to create a 2X zoom effect. In the process a 1MP area is discarded (the half that is cropped). The other 1MP area is enlarged in a process that copies every pixel once to generate a 2MP photo. Although the new photo seems to include 2MP it really includes only 1MP of information that was copied once. The result is a photo with a quality equivalent to a 1MP photo.

If you have used a 4X digital zoom in this example the result would have been a photo with an equivalent quality of a 0.5MP camera (the zoom area is 1/4 of the frame - 3/4 of the frame would be discarded and the rest 1/4 would be copied three times to fill the frame).

Digital zoom significantly reduces the quality of the photo. If your camera does not include digital zoom you can always shoot the photo without zooming and then use a PC photo editing software to crop a portion of it and enlarge the rest. In fact using PC software is always the preferred method to built-in digital zoom since it allows you to try different zoom sizes, different zoom areas and different zoom algorithms while not losing the original photo.

So which one is better?

Optical zoom is superior to digital zoom. In fact from a practical point of view digital zoom should not be considered zoom at all. It is always better to apply digital zoom on a PC at a later time rather then when taking the photo using the camera's built-in digital zoom. When using a PC different sizes can be used and different zoom algorithms that can result in better qualities.

Know your camera's zoom

Some manufacturers claim the maximum zoom figure their cameras support without specifying if it is optical or digital zoom. This information is confusing as many consumers do not understand the difference between the two. For example if a camera supports a 5X optical zoom and 10X digital zoom advertising the camera as a "10X zoom camera" is confusing - 10X digital zoom can be done with any camera using simple PC software.

When buying a camera always make sure that you know what the optical zoom figure is and that it meets your needs. Ignore the digital zoom figure as it does not mean much and can not compensate for a camera with poor optical zoom.

The year 2008 will be written about in finance textbooks for generations to come. The inevitable collapse of the boom, built single-headedly on credit, finally came home to roast. Ironically, further liquidity is what has, thus far, ensured the survival of the system. Having received the rubber stamp for a $700B bailout, leave it to politicians to decuple that number to, a now estimated, $7 trillion. A liability that is set to fall on the shoulders of your kids and grandkids that realistically will never be paid off. By next year, America will join the likes of Japan and Italy with GDP-to-debt ratios in excess of 100%. How will congress dig itself out of this whole? All fingers are pointing to the monetization of debt.

Fundamentally, things could not be looking better for the gold. The printing presses are running on overtime and there seems to be no end to this Japan-style bailout of America. Helicopter Ben is well on his way in fulfilling his legendary promise to never allow deflation. The explosion in money supply has been unprecedented, only comparable to Zimbabwe and the likes of Argentina, Poland and the Roman Empire, among many others. History is plagued with examples of nations that have taken this destructive path. Given the current events, are precious metal markets reacting the way they should be? Many would argue NO.

Gold has kept its own in the face historic redemptions and the rush for liquidity but had one foretold the current events, most analysts would have predicted gold to be four digits in such an environment. The impossibility to purchase bullion the past few months has given further rise to the manipulation argument. Is the proposition that the Fed may have a hand in the gold price so ludicrous a theory? In reference to the 1980s, Paul Volker himself stated “Letting gold go to $850 was a mistake.” Gold has been money for over 2000 years. Watching the price of the dollar plummet in gold terms would signal nothing less than the slow extinction of our dollar. This evident loss in value of our currency is in direct consequence to the Federal Reserve, whose primary responsibility is not to ensure growth (as it is adamantly doing now) but to maintain the dollar’s value (an irony in itself with the dollar having lost 96% of its value since inception). Nevertheless, whether there is a hand in the gold market or not, we use the charts to evaluate our investments.

In times of distress, the best solution is often to take a look at the long-term picture of things. Over the long-term chart we have seen no changes in gold, it continues to be one of the best performing asset classes of the decade. The carnage in the markets have pulled down gold and it remains in a trend of lower lows and lower highs so caution is warranted but gold remains in a long-term bull market. Short-term, the MACD is conveying that gold is oversold is a consolidation is in the cards. Ideally we would like to see a breakout through the green downward trend, with a curling up and crossover of the 200 and 50-day moving averages. Gold will once again have its day but patience is warranted.

Gold stocks appear much healthier than physical gold. After the savage plunge in October, gold stocks have been performing very well, nearly doubling from their lows of 150. Ideally we would like to see HUI consolidate between 250 and 300, while gold corrects, before blasting higher by the end of the first quarter. It is important to note that HUI has performing very well relative to general market. This is of vital importance as gold stocks always lead the gold price at the start of any leg up.

The dollar has had an impressive run into the second half of 2008, after building a base in the earlier part of the year. A small head and shoulders topping pattern was erected from October to December, the dollar has now clearly broken its uptrend line and the long-term bear will gain stronghold once again. The forced redemptions and liquidations that brought life back into dollar are now coming to a close. All asset classes were severally sold off to obtain dollars to purchase treasury bills. The days of running to T-Bills as a safe-haven are also numbered. It is only a matter of time before investors throw in the towel and refuse 0% returns on a currency whose supply has literally more than doubled the past year. We can almost hear the popping sound of the last remaining bubble in Treasury Bills. The dollar can be expected to consolidate here for a few weeks before resuming its downward spiral towards its intrinsic value, zero.

A commodity that is necessary for maintaining our industrially and technologically-reliant way of life, would never be expected to fall off the proverbial cliff in this manner. Oil has lost nearly three-quarters of its value in the second half of 2008. This retracement can only be viewed as temporary, with world oil reserves declining at nearly double digits rates and the money supply growing exponentially, the price of oil will recover. Oil needs to get above 50-day moving average to show signs of life but a relief rally is inevitable. A 50% retraction of the decline leads us to a target of at least $70.

CONCLUSION:

Over the long-term gold is set to continue its dramatic rise, as long as the printing press continue to run full-tilt. We will maintain our long-term precious metal stock positions, established in late October and November. Traders may have chosen to take some profits and unwound their GLD positions. A consolidation should provide us with fresh opportunities to re-enter positions that can be held for the remainder of the year. We will maintain our positions in oil, established the past couple few weeks. It appears that the crisis has somewhat abated and this should bring some stability back into the markets going forward. We will be reviewing where the stock market is headed and the specific sectors that are showing the most promise in the next few issues.
