The exciting development of digital photography began as digital cameras became more commercially available to the general public which was sometime around the late 80s to the mid 90s.

Since then, digital has become very popular and many people have just stored away their traditional film cameras in closets etc prefering the new and exciting world of digital cameras.

It is important to get to know what digital photography is before we get straight in to the details of the digital camera and it's excellent finer points. Actually, digital photography is the act of taking photos which are then saved on to a reusable memory card format instead of traditional films.

A  photo which is scanned therefore can also be considered as a digital photo.

Since introduction people now prefer the digital photo format instead of film for several reasons. The first
and most noticable advantage of all is being able to see immediately the results of digital photo's as is instantaneous.

After the photo is taken, the photographer can immediately check the results of his shot and decide then and there if he does or doesn't like the photograph. Being able to do this means it is a much cheaper process than film because when using film. With film the photos have to be developed  before you are able to view the results, this usually means that all shots including the duds which can't be seen until they are printed, unlike instant viewing from digital.

Another reason why people prefer taking digital photographs rather than traditional ones on film is that there are many cheap and efficient ways you can share your digital photo or pictures. For instance, one can send it via computer or cell phone using e-mail, copy the photos to a disc, or using computer instantly print photos for better result than film, without having to wait for processing.

However, there are occassions where the professional photographer will choose traditional film photographs over digital ones. Thie main reason for this according to them being that photos taken on film will produce a more lifelike image than those taken using digital camera.

But as digital cameras develop and get more advanced, the digital cameras of today are slowly but surely gaining ground on the film cameras it will only be a matter of time before they are actually able to produce images that will impress even the professionals!
